2024 Slovak presidential election

23 March 2024 (first round)
6 April 2024 (second round)

Incumbent President

Zuzana Čaputová
Independent

Presidential elections will be held in Slovakia in March and April 2024. The first round will be held on 23 March and if no candidate receives more than half of the votes, the second run featuring two candidates with the highest support will take place on 6 April.[1]

Incumbent president Zuzana Čaputová announced in June 2023 that she would not run for a second term.[2]

Electoral system

The President of Slovakia is elected using the two-round system; if no candidate gains a majority in the first round, a runoff will be held between the top-two candidates.[3]

Candidates

Announced

Speculative

  • Andrej Danko, former Speaker of the National Council, Chairman of SNS and an incumbent MP. As a chairman of the governing coalition party, he hinted that he may run for president if coalition parties fail to find agreement on a single candidate, likely Peter Pellegrini. As SNS did not hold 15 parliamentary seats, Danko's candidacy would require 15 thousand popular signatures.[21]
  • Peter Gajdoš, former Minister of Defence, army general. Mentioned as a potential partisan candidate of SNS.[22]
  • Martin Jakubec, businessman, singer, television personality. He announced his presidential candidacy in the 2019 election, but failed to meet the minimal age requirement.[23] He ran in the 2022 Slovak local elections as a candidate of ĽSNS for the Mayor of Bratislava, receiving 1.39%.[24] In March 2020, he announced on his Facebook profile that he will run for the 2024 presidential election, but it remains unclear whether he has started collecting the 15,000 citizen or 15 MP signatures.[25] Jakubec reiterated the intention on 24 December 2023.
  • Vladimír Palko, mathematician, university professor, former Minister of the Interior, political commentator. He confirmed rumours of candidacy in an interview on 17 August 2023, but failed to confirm the intention.[26]
  • Miroslav Radačovský, MEP. In January 2024, he announced his aim to run for president with the support of SNS.[27]
  • Martin Daňo, far right activist and internet personality. He also ran for president candidacy in 2019 election. Daňo claimed that he received support of the SNS MP Peter Kotlár.[28]
  • Róbert Švec, leader of the far-right Party of Slovak Restoration. He also ran for president candidacy in 2019.[28]

Declined

  • Zuzana Čaputová, incumbent President. Initially has not ruled out her candidacy for re-election.[29] She announced on 20 June 2023 that she won't run.[30]
  • Erika Jurinová, vice-chairman of OĽaNO movement, incumbent Governor of Žilina Region and a former MP. Put forward as a speculative candidate by Igor Matovič in November 2023. Jurinová declined candidacy.[31]
  • Viliam Karas, lawyer and former Minister of Justice, member and expert of KDH. It was speculated that a KDH candidate may be a result of internal primaries against MEP Miriam Lexmann. In November 2023, Karas declined to comment on his candidacy but declined the speculations in December 2023 during a Rádio Slovensko interview with Anna Vargová.[32][33]
  • Milan Krajniak, vice-chairman of Sme Rodina political movement, former Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, and a former MP. Krajniak declined the speculative candidacy in November 2023.[31] In 2019, Krajniak ran unsuccessfully receiving 2.77% of votes in first round of presidential elections.
  • Miriam Lexmann, MEP for Christian Democratic Movement. Speculated as a potential candidate of KDH. Lexmann, wife of Movement's chairman Milan Majerský, declared that she is considering the candidacy in November 2023. Her candidacy would also be a result of informal primaries within KDH, due to speculative candidacy of Viliam Karas.[32] Karas refused candidacy on 12 December 2023.[33] Days earlier, Lexmann hinted a preference for continued post of an MEP over presidency.[34] Lexmann eventually declined candidacy on 19 December 2023.[35]
  • František Mikloško, incumbent non-partisan MP in KDH caucus, former Speaker of the National Council, former anti-Communist dissident.[31] Mikloško ran for president unsuccessfully thrice, peaking with a 2004 result of 6.52% in the first round, with a most recent result of 5.73% in 2019.
  • Peter Weiss, diplomat, former chairman of the SDĽ and former ambassador to the Czech Republic and Hungary. He was rumoured to be the candidate of HLAS–SD.[36] Weiss declined the candidacy in late August 2023.[37]
  • Robert Fico, incumbent chairman of SMER–SD and Prime Minister, 2014 presidential candidate. He ruled out his candidancy on 17 December 2023.[38]
  • Štefan Hamran, former President of the Police Force. Hamran announced that he considers candidacy in mid-December 2023, subject to avaiability of campaign staff, funding and collection of 15-thousand citizen petition.[39] On 21 December 2023 Hamran ruled out his candidacy.[40]
  • Maroš Žilinka, incumbent Prosecutor General of Slovakia. Although he never confirmed the claims that he will run in the elections,[41] some journalists, political scientists and politicians, including the Minister of Defence Jaroslav Naď, still speculated about Žilinka's candidacy throughout 2022.[42][43] In September 2023, Žilinka refuted the rumors and finally declined candidacy.[44]
  • Igor Matovič, Chairman of the SLOVAKIA political movement, former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. His candidacy was speculated by political scientist and researcher Václav Hřích.[45] In a TA3 interview during Christmas 2023, Matovič said he will not run.[1]
  • Robert Mistrík, researcher, entrepreneur and co-founder of SaS. He ran in the previous presidential election, but later withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Zuzana Čaputová.[46] He hinted a decision by the end of 2023.[5] In January 2024, Mistrík ruled out his candidacy, saying he prefers to focus on science.[28]
