Etymology
13th century. Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese vermello, from Vulgar Latin vermiculus (“purple, red”), attested as a color in the writings of Isidore of Seville, from Latin vermiculus (“little worm”), similar to coccinus (“purple”). Compare Portuguese vermelho.
