From Proto-Finnic *umpi, possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *umbi (“around, about, by, near”), which was perhaps already borrowed into Proto-Finno-Saamic (compare Northern Sami oppa (“whole; quite a”)). Alternatively possibly related to Komi-Zyrian об (ob).
