Etymology

An early borrowing from Tai Nüa ᥓᥝᥲ (tsàw, “chief, monarch”), from Middle Chinese 主 (MC tsyuX, “master; owner”), showing regular sound change /*ts/>/t/ (cf. Pela ta³¹ vs. Zaiwa zo ("child")). Compare with Thai เจ้า (jâao), Lao ເຈົ້າ (chao), Lhao Vo zug' and Zaiwa zau.
