From older téaltóigh (assimilated to the suffix -igh), denominal from téaltó, from Middle Irish tétló, verbal noun of an unattested Old Irish *do·etlen (to steal, carry off), from to- + ess- + tlenaid (to steal), from Proto-Celtic *tlinati (to take away), from Proto-Indo-European *tl̥néh₂ti (to lift), present imperfective of *telh₂-.
