tänään

Finnish

Temporal adverbs
Previous: eilen
Next: huomenna

Etymology

tänä (singular essive form of tämä) + suffix -än, for which multiple explanations exist:[1]

  • a reduction of -pänä (tänäpänä), a dialectal word which would be cognate with Karelian tänäpäi, Ludian tänäpäi, Veps t'äńämbäi, Votic tänäpõin, tänäpä; and Livonian täm'põ and originally a contraction of tänä päivänä (on this day).
  • reduced form of the instructive suffix -in, based on dialectal forms such as tänäin
  • third-person possessive suffix
  • illative suffix

Compare Estonian täna, Udmurt туннэ (tunne, today) and Kamassian ҭейнен (today).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈtænæːn/, [ˈt̪ænæːn]
  • Rhymes: -ænæːn
