Etymology

Uncertain, but probably of Slavic origin; compare Romanian strai (“clothing, garment”), which may or may not be the same word, but is likely related. Cf. Slovene srajca (“shirt”), Serbo-Croatian tranja (“rag, tatters”). Alternatively from a Vulgar Latin *sternium, or from Latin stramen.
