Uncertain, but probably of Slavic origin; compare Romanian strai (“clothing, garment”). Cf. Polish strój (“garment, clothing, attire”), Slovene srajca (“shirt”), Serbo-Croatian tranja (“rag, tatters”). Alternatively from a Vulgar Latin *sternium, or from Latin stramen.
