Etymology

16th century, from archaic stochen (to stir, stoke) + -ern (frequentative suffix). Said verb is derived from Proto-West Germanic *stokōn (whence English stoke), possibly through Middle Low German stōken. See stochen for more. Ultimately related with stoßen (to thrust) and Stock (stick).
