From the bound morpheme skad- (“magpie, derived from skade (“magpie in Danish”)”) +‎ -it (“a bound morpheme signifying bird”) (This Original Volapük morpheme (suffix) -it (“bird”) is the final component for the words of various birds in Volapük, such as kanerit for “canary” (now superseded by kanair), blukit for “sandpiper” or “wagtail”, pigit for “woodpecker” (superseded by pikit, cf. Latin pīcus), merit for “blackbird” (superseded by merul, cf. Latin merula), pepit for “Bohemian waxwing” (pep is the Volapükian word for “pepper”), popularly called the “pepperbird”; cf. husskade: hus (“house”) and skade (“magpie”), the Danish term for the Eurasian magpie, Pica pica.
