From Middle High German rüeren, from Old High German hruorjan, from Proto-Germanic *hrōzijaną (“to stir, move”), from *hrōzaz (“active, stirring”). Cognate with German rühren, Dutch roeren, English rear, Icelandic hræra, Swedish röra.
