Inherited from Sanskrit मरण (maraṇa). Cognate with Ashokan Prakrit 𑀫𑀮𑀦 (malana, Kalsi), 𐨨𐨪𐨞 (maraṇa, Mansehra, Shahbazgarhi) / 𑀫𑀭𑀡 (maraṇa, Girnar), (whence Prakrit 𑀫𑀭𑀡 (maraṇa)). By surface analysis, mar (root) + -ana .
