Usage notes

  • Along with the prefix pang-, this prefix is affected by initial consonant mutations.
  • The prefix becomes mam- before b or p. Where the root begins with p, the consonants in question may be deleted.
  • the prefix becomes man- before d, l, s, t. Where the root begins with s or t, the consonants in question may be deleted (e.g. manusok, root tusok)).
  • Where the initial of the root is a /k/, the sound is dropped (e.g. manguha, root kuha)).
  • Where the initial of the root is a vowel, the resulting affixed form is written without a hyphen (e.g. manganak, root anak)), however this is typically not observed in more recent affixed forms where a hyphen is added (e.g. *mang-inis for manginis, root inis)).
