mátka

Hungarian

Etymology

Uncertain, perhaps a Slavic loanword, compare Slovak matka (mother), Russian ма́тка (mátka, womb, female, queen bee), from Proto-Slavic *mati (mother). However, the Hungarian word has never meant 'mother' and the Slavic words have never had the meaning of 'fiancée'. Originally, the Hungarian word was both male and female.
