From Middle Low German kôken, from Proto-West Germanic *kokōn, an early loan from Late Latin cocō, from Classical Latin coquō (“to cook, roast”). Cognate with English cook, German kochen. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pekʷ-, whence also Sanskrit पचति (pacati), Russian печь (pečʹ).
