Probably from Middle Low German kluteren. Likely cognate of Danish kludre (“to bungle”). Possibly from the same root as kloss, klot, or klut. Compare with kludda.
Usage notes
Usually when considered vandalism in (sense 2). A neutral phrase is "måla graffiti" (paint graffiti).
