From Malay kala jengking, from Classical Malay kala jengking, from Javanese kalajengking (ꦏꦭꦗꦼꦁꦏꦶꦁ), from Old Javanese kala jĕṅkiṅ. Equivalent to kala (“stinging animal, scorpion”) + jengking (“upside-down, topsy-turvy”). The standard spelling was influenced by Javanese spelling.
