Compound of jalan (road) + layang (float), literally floating road, coined by Indonesian linguist Anton Moedardo Moeliono. Compare to Japanese 高架道路(こうかどうろ) (kōkadōro, elevated road), Chinese 高架道路 (gāojià dàolù, “elevated road”).
