huppu
Finnish
Etymology
Unclear.
- Perhaps from huppa, huppo (“a type of hoodlike headwear; covering”) + -u. Compare dialectal hupussa, umpihupussa (“covered”) and huppeluksissa (“under water”).
- Possibly derived through contamination with the words hukkua (“to drown”), uppo (“under water”) and upota (“to sink”).
- Cognate with Karelian huppu (“hood, covering”), though that may be a loan of the Finnish word.

- IPA(key): /ˈhupːu/, [ˈhupːu]
