Borrowed from Late Latin hypocrisis, from Ancient Greek ὑπόκρισις (hupókrisis, “answer, stage acting, pretense”), from ῠ̔ποκρῑ́νομαι (hupokrī́nomai, “to reply”), from ὑπό (hupó, “under, hypo-”) + the middle voice of κρῑ́νω (krī́nō, “to separate, to judge, to decide”).
