Inherited from Ottoman Turkish خطاء (hataen, “by mistake”), from Arabic خَطَأً (ḵaṭaʔan), adverbial accusative of خَطَأ (ḵaṭaʔ, “mistake”). By surface analysis, hata (“mistake”) + -en. Compare Azerbaijani xətaən.
