Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *harδ, from Proto-Indo-European *HorT- (vine-branch, grape-vine, shot of a vine).[1] Possibly related to ardh ~ erdha (to come, derive). For sense development compare Proto-Germanic *stamniz, both 'tree stalk' and 'tribe, origin'. Possibly the source of the name of the Illyrian tribe Ardiaei.
