haava
Estonian
Finnish
Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *haava, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hawwą (“blow, hit”) or early Proto-Norse *ᚺᚨᚹᚹᚨ- (*hawwa-),[1] compare Icelandic högg (“hit, stroke”). Cognate with Estonian haav, Proto-Germanic *hawwaną. Alternatively from Proto-Finno-Ugric *čaŋɜ- (“to hit”); compare Erzya чавомс (čavoms, “to beat, drive in”), чаво (čavo, “empty”).[2]
