Etymology

höra (hear) + av (from)

Verb

höra av (present hör av, preterite hörde av, supine hört av, imperative hör av)

  1. to hear from
Vi har inte hört av henne på flera månader
We haven't heard from her for several months
Hon har inte hörts av på länge
She has not been heard from in a long time
    Vi kan höras av
We could keep in touch (reciprocal meaning – "hear from each other" ("be heard from," literally))
    Vi kan väl höras av?
Why don't we keep in touch? ("We can keep in touch, right?" / "We can keep in touch, I guess" – can also be interpreted as a non-question without the question mark in this case (see väl))

Usage notes

  • A particle verb. Stress on av.
  • See also höra av sig, which can be thought of as the opposite. "If you don't hear from me" is often more idiomatically expressed as "om jag inte hör av mig" (if I don't "hear from myself"), with a reversal.
  • Formal-sounding in the present (avhörande) and past (avhörd) participles.
