Etymology
From Old High German grīnan, from Proto-Germanic *grīnaną (“to snarl, show teeth, growl”). Compare Luxembourgish gréngen (“to grizzle, cry”), German greinen (“to whine, moan”), Faroese grína (“to grin, laugh”), Swedish grina (“to weep, cry; to laugh”), Danish grine (“to laugh”).
