Either (1) from *gjir- (as in Arvanitic ngjiris (to make curdle)) + collective -, from Proto-Indo-European *sr̥djo (whey) (compare Latin serum, Ancient Greek ὀρός (orós));[1] or (2) from *gjin + -, from Proto-Albanian *sina (modern gji), from Proto-Indo-European *s(H)i-n- (compare English sinew, Latvian sainis (string), Ancient Greek ἱμάς (himás, strap, thong)), referring to the tying of the rennet bag in which the cheese is made.[2]
