1670s, borrowed from New Latin gastrocnēmius, from Ancient Greek γαστροκνημία (gastroknēmía, “calf of the leg”), from γαστήρ (gastḗr, “paunch, belly”) + κνήμη (knḗmē, “leg”).[1]
