From Middle Irish garrda,[2] from Old Norse garðr (“enclosed space, yard”),[3] from Proto-Germanic *gardaz (“court, yard, enclosure”), from *ǵʰortós (“enclosure”), from *ǵʰer- (“to enclose”). Doublet of gort.
