From Proto-Italic *feɣʷris, from earlier *θeɣʷris, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰegʷʰris, an extension of the root *dʰegʷʰ- (“to burn, warm”). Cognate with februum, foveō, Ancient Greek τέφρα (téphra).[1]
