From early modern Irish áinleóg, from Middle Irish áilleóc,[1] fainleóc[2] (compare Scottish Gaelic ainleag), a diminutive of Old Irish ainnel,[3] fannall,[4] from Proto-Celtic *wesnālā (swallow) (compare Welsh gwennol (swallow, martin), Cornish guennol, Breton gwenneli), from Proto-Celtic *wesr-/wesn- (spring), from Proto-Indo-European *wósr̥ (spring).
