From earlier embrunals by metathesis from *umbrenals, from Ancient Greek ὀμβρινά τρήματα (ombriná trḗmata, “holes for rain”), from ὀμβρινός (ombrinós, “of rain”) from ὄμβρος (ómbros, “rainstorm”) and τρῆμα (trêma, “hole”).
