From Old Irish duilne, from Proto-Celtic *dolnyā, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰelh₁- (“to bloom”). Cognate with Welsh dail and Breton delienn, which are from a variant Proto-Celtic form *dolyā, and more distantly with Ancient Greek θάλλω (thállō, “to bloom”).
