From Malay curi, from Hindi चोरी (corī, “thief”), from Sanskrit चोर (cora, “thief, robber”) with the root चुर् (cur, “to steal, rob”). Cognate of Javanese ꦕꦺꦴꦫꦃ (corah, “thief, bandit; bad person”), Old Javanese corah, cora (“thief, robber”).
