Inherited from Old French çuete, diminutive of choë, cauwe, from Vulgar Latin *cawa or from Old Dutch *kāwa (jackdaw) (compare Dutch kauw, English chough), from Proto-West Germanic *kahu, from Proto-Indo-European *gewH- (to call, cry).
