Inherited from Old French çuete, diminutive of choë, cauwe, from Vulgar Latin *cawa or from Old Dutch *kāwa (“jackdaw”) (compare Dutch kauw, English chough), from Proto-West Germanic *kahu, from Proto-Indo-European *gewH- (“to call, cry”).
