Borrowed from East Slavic, from Old East Slavic хомѣкъ (xoměkŭ), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kāmjas (compare Latvian kāmis (“hamster”), Lithuanian kãmas (“rat”)).[1] See further at Proto-Slavic *xoměstorъ.
