Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kāmjas (compare Lithuanian kãmas (rat)). Probably influenced by an Iranian language (Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬙𐬀𐬭 (hamaēstar, pest, one who makes mess)).[1]
