From Arabic قِرْطَاس (qirṭās), from Ancient Greek χάρτης (khártēs, “sheet of paper”), from χαράσσω (kharássō, “to scratch, to inscribe”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to scratch”). Cognate to English chart. Doublet of carta.
