Etymology
From earlier *burburqe, pluralized form of *burbuk, a formation with root doubling, from Proto-Indo-European *bher- (“to roar, buzz”) (onomatopoeic). Compare Ancient Greek πεμφρηδών (pemphrēdṓn, “kind of wasp”), Sanskrit बम्भर (bambhara, “bee”) and Lithuanian barbė́ti (“clang, clink”).
