Inherited from Middle French brouet, from Old French broet, diminutive of Old French breu, *brou, from Late Latin brodium, from Frankish *broþ, from Proto-Germanic *bruþą (“broth”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁- (“to seethe, brew”). Cognate with English broth, Icelandic broð.
