     However, this leads to the accumulation of unwanted side-products like ergosterol and brassicasterol that cannot be converted to pregnenolone by CYP11A1, due to the presence of a double bond between carbon atoms 20 and 22 in the side-chain of these substrates, resulting in a reduced efficiency of the whole-cell system.
