Etymology
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بوش یره (boş yere, “in vain, groundlessly”),[1] equivalent to compound of boş (“empty, idle, vain”) + yer (“place, ground, situation”) + -e (dative suffix), literally “to an empty place”.
