Borrowed from Malay berniaga (“trade”), ultimately from Sanskrit वाणिज्यक (vāṇijyaka, “merchant”), from वाणिज (vāṇija, “merchant, trader”), with semantic change to “slave”. Compare Cebuano banyaga (“rascal”), Ilocano baniaga (“trade”), and Tiruray baniyaga (“slave”).
