Etymology

From bak (buck) + -ot (accusative suffix) + (to shoot), literally to shoot a buck, a calque of German einen Bock schießen. Its origin in German is related to 16th century competitions organized in shooting associations where the lowest ranked shooter received a he-goat as a consolation prize.[1]
