Swedish

Etymology

From Old Norse bǿta, from Proto-Germanic *bōtijaną.

Verb

böta (present bötar, preterite bötade, supine bötat, imperative böta)

  1. to pay a fine, to be fined
Han fick böta 2000 kronor för fortkörning.
He had to [got to] pay a fine of 2000 kronor for speeding.
  2. (figuratively) to pay (suffer negative consequences)
    böta med sitt liv
    pay with one's life

Usage notes

  • More rarely conjugated bötte, bött, says SAOL (1923). This is the case in the very antiquated proverb hött är med ingo bött (a threat is with naught atoned, is not a crime).
