  2. (transitive or intransitive) to open for business
    Ich liebe den neuen Laden, der kürzlich aufgemacht hat.

Usage notes

  • Aufmachen and zumachen are not in themselves informal. However, the formal language prefers öffnen and schließen, which are in turn rare in colloquial speech (though schließen is common in compounds like abschließen, zuschließen, etc.).
