From a Vulgar Latin root *assurdīre, itself either from Latin surdus or obsurdescere, present active infinitive of obsurdēscō. Compare Aromanian asurdzãscu, asurdzãri, Italian assordire, French assourdir. Cf. also Portuguese ensurdecer, Spanish ensordecer.
