Alternative forms

Etymology

From Arabic زُحَل (zuḥal, Saturn).

Pronunciation

  • (file)

Proper noun

Zohali

  1. Saturn (planet)

Usage notes

  • Zohali was traditionally used to refer to the planet Saturn.[1]

A 1995 dictionary used the name for the seventh planet Uranus.[2] Some books for primary school use in Tanzania repeated this usage.[3][4]

In the present dictionaries this aberration has been corrected and Zohali is reserved for the sixth planet Saturn (Kamusi Kuu ya Kiswahili, Longhorn Nairobi 2017, →ISBN ("sayari ya sita" = the sixth planet); TUKI ENglish-Swahili Dictionary 3rd edition, Dar es Salaam 2006, →ISBN ("Saturn 1. Zohali").
