Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طرابلس غرب (tarâbülüs-i garb), from Arabic طَرَابُلُس الْغَرْب (ṭarābulus al-ḡarb, literally “Tripoli of the West”), as opposed to طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (ṭarābulus aš-šām, literally “Tripoli of Syria”) (whence Turkish Trablusşam (Ottoman Turkish طرابلس شام (tarâbülüs-i şâm))).
