Etymology
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طرابلس شام (tarâbülüs-i şâm), from Arabic طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (ṭarābulus aš-šām, literally “Tripoli of Syria”), as opposed to طَرَابُلُس الغَرْب (ṭarābulus al-ḡarb, literally “Tripoli of the West”) (whence Turkish Trablusgarp (Ottoman Turkish طرابلس غرب (tarâbülüs-i garb))).
