Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طرابلس شام (tarâbülüs-i şâm), from Arabic طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (ṭarābulus aš-šām, literally Tripoli of Syria), as opposed to طَرَابُلُس الغَرْب (ṭarābulus al-ḡarb, literally Tripoli of the West) (whence Turkish Trablusgarp (Ottoman Turkish طرابلس غرب (tarâbülüs-i garb))).
