First attested as Topweer in 1781. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian were (“parcel, landed property”). The first element may be a familiar form of Old Frisian Theudobald (“a personal name”) or derive from Dutch Low Saxon top (“first cut of mown grass”).
